Climate & Weather

The Czech Republic has a temperate continental climate, with warm summers and cold, cloudy and snowy winters. The conference will be held in August, which is relatively warm and dry. Average temperatures in August are 23 °C /12 °C (avg. high/ avg. low)

Currency & Foreign Exchange

The Czech Republic official currency is the Czech Koruna (CZK). Banknotes are issued in the following denominations: 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 CZK; and coins in use are: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 CZK. Vending machines usually accpet only coins.

Insurance and Liability

The Organizing Committee will not be responsible for medical expenses, accidents or losses or unexpected damage to property belonging to symposium participants, either during or as a result of the symposium or during all tours and events. Participants are strongly advised to arrange their own insurance for the health and accidents, lost luggage, and trip cancellation.

Time Difference

Czech Republic is on Central European Time (GMT+2) as well as Berlin, Bonn, Budapest, Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, Vienna, Warsaw and the others. It is:

  • 1 hour ahead of England
  • 6 hours ahead of New York
  • 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles
  • 7 hours behind Singapore
  • 8 hours behind Tokyo
  • 10 hours behind Sydney

The standard voltage in Czech Republic is 230 volts. The outlet has two round holes and is the same type used in France, Germany, Austria, Greece, Turkey, and many other countries. Always check the power supply before using your equipment.

Tax & Tipping

Value-added tax is levied on most goods and services at a standard rate of 21% and is included in the retail price. Tipping is customary in Czech Republic (usually 10 %).

Business Hours

Shops

In smaller shops, opening hours are usually Monday to Friday from 8 or 9 am until 6 pm. Shops are usually only open in the morning on Saturday. In larger cities, shops are usually open later, for example until 8 or 9 pm. The smallest shops sometimes have a break for lunch, usually between 12 noon to 1 pm. Hypermarkets and shopping centres are usually open 7 days a week until 9 pm, often even on public holidays. Some shops and petrol stations operate almost nonstop (other than the early hours of the morning).

Banks

Banks are regularly open on weekdays during working hours. Busy branches in city centres are usually open later, for example until 8 pm. Access to cash machines is ensured 24 hours a day.

Authorities

Monday and Wednesday are standard office days for authorities, from 9 am until 5 pm. Some authorities provide services for the public on other days too although offices are usually closed over lunch (often from 12 noon until 1 pm).

Post Offices
